Shaws Corner - Ayot St. Lawrence, Hertfordshire
Shaws Corner in Ayot St. Lawrence, nr Welwyn, Hertfordshire, was home to the famous Irish playwright, George Bernard Shaw. Shaws Corner was built in 1902 as the new rectory for Ayot St. Lawrence.
In November 1906, the property was let to Bernard and Charlotte Shaw. They eventually bought the property and land outright for £6,220 in 1920. For 40 years this was home to George Bernard Shaw and his wife.
What to see and do at Shaws Corner
Shaw's Corner is an Arts & Crafts house which is much as he left it. The clothes in Shaw's wardrobe, the typewriter, glasses and dictionary in his study and the collection of hats in the hall, as well as the 1938 Oscar for Pygmalion, give you the sense Shaw has just left the room.
Hidden away in the garden is the hut in which Shaw wrote his best known works. The hut revolved to catch the sun, and the electric heater and telephone meant that Shaw could work here in all weathers. Surrounding it the orchard, flower meadow, rose dell and densely planted herbaceous beds create a vigorous, quintessentially English garden, richly stocked with pre-1950s plants.
