Hertford Castle - Hertford, Hertfordshire
Hertford Castle was built by Edward the Elder around 911. In 1066 during the Norman invasion, a motte and bailey were on the castle site surrounded by a moat. William the Conqueror granted the castle to Peter de Valoignes, the Sheriff of Hertfordshire and Essex.
Modern Day Hertford Castle
Hertford Castle is situated on the river Lea in Hertford, Hertfordshire and is now home to Hertford Town Council. The castle also caters for Hertfordshire weddings and also has a great calendar of events for 2009, including open air bands, rock festivals and open air shakespeare theatre. Some of these events are also offering FREE tours of the castle and it's grounds.
